We’re having a hard time remembering our last great family vacation! With gas prices the way they are, it’s hard to find the perfect destination for a family of four that’s close to home, loads of fun, and doesn’t cost a fortune. After thinking about where we wanted to go, and getting all everyone’s opinions, we decided to dust off the old tent and have a go at a real-live, weeklong camping fest! The only problem is that I’m self-employed and can’t afford to stop working even during vacations, so like it or not, I’ve got to drag some technology along on the trip. But how do I stay plugged-in when I’m outdoors?

The first challenge is finding a spot at or near the campground with wi-fi capabilities. That’s actually not too difficult these days, when every place from the public library to the local Panera Bread is wired. A bigger problem, however, was keeping all of my gadgets charged throughout the week without being able to plug them into the car-charger. So I did a little homework and discovered that there are solar battery chargers out there for all kinds of gadgets and devices, some of which I didn’t even know existed!

For my purposes, I was excited to find a nifty little product on the Internet called the Solio. For hand-held electronics, it’s the mother of all solar battery chargers. It can provide a charge for everything in my briefcase: my cell phone, iPod, PDA –- even the GPS unit that’s going to keep us from getting lost as we explore the coast of Maine on our camping trip. And this particular solar battery charger fits right in my pocket, which makes it a must-have for all the tech-happy wanderers out there.

Solar battery chargers aren’t just limited to small electronics either. I can of course recharge batteries of all shapes and sizes, like AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, and even the tiny ones for hearing aids! Plus, I can also buy a charger for the lithium-ion batteries that are widely used in digital cameras. This is an absolute must, because we always end up taking about a million pictures while we’re on vacation. There are also solar battery chargers for cars and RVs, as well as weatherproof, collapsible marine panels for boats, which I’m sure will come in handy for lots of folks out there.

In the end, I invested in solar battery chargers for all of my hand-helds and for the car as well. Doing so truly helped make my vacation worry-free, since I knew I’d be able to stay connected and keep pace with the demands of my business no matter how far off the beaten path we traveled!

If you're concerned about the environment, there are a lot of reasons to think about working from home. If you already have a home office, you may be familiar with some of them. But read on anyway to find out how working from home can make your lifestyle even greener.

Right from the start, working from home helps you save on fuel costs, and benefits the environment. If you commute 60 miles roundtrip every day, for 48 weeks out of the year, you drive over 14,000 miles. So by using your home office, you are significantly reducing the carbon dioxide that your vehicle contributes to air pollution. And even if your car gets 30 miles per gallon, at the cost of $4 per gallon, you will personally be saving at least $1,800 per year in fuel costs.

You can also make green choices when you purchase office supplies. Some of the easiest green supplies to purchase are recycled ink cartridges, recycled paper and energy efficient light bulbs. Recycled ink cartridges for your printer are also usually less expensive than the brand name versions.

If you're concerned about your printer's warranty and you want to stick with the brand name, you can still recycle the empty cartridges. Watch for the ink cartridge recycling bins at your local office supply store. In some communities, there are even ink cartridge recycling bins in the pet stores. So keep your eye out for the retailers who are trying to do their part to be eco-friendly, and let them help you recycle.

Recycled paper is sometimes a little more expensive than the regular version. So if you're on a budget, recycle your paper in other ways. Instead of tossing all used paper out, start a pile for paper that has been used only on one side. Keep it in a location that makes it handy to use for scratch paper. Then when you really are ready to throw paper out, be sure to toss it into the recycling bin instead of the regular trash.

Using energy efficient light bulbs in your home office can save you time and money, as well as helping you stay green. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. These bulbs use only about 20 percent of the energy that incandescent bulbs use. They last 3 to 4 times longer than regular bulbs, so you won't have to change then as often.

Most of these tips cost very little or no money. If you're interested in cleaning up the environment, these are easy ways to begin. If you're already doing these things, spread the word to friends and family who are just getting started on their eco-friendly lifestyles.

Home Energy Audit: Checking Out the Parts of the Home

Going about a home energy audit is one smart way of cutting the utility bills that you pay for at the end of every month. Many people tend to forget about the parts of their homes that might be causing the rise in the home energy consumption. One fact that you must learn to take note of is that the home appliances that you possess, although they are switched off and not in use, still consume energy because of the phantom loads that they create. Examples of these are the VCRs, stereo components, microwave oven, toasters, and the stoves.

Although they are turned off, they still consume energy. How much more when you total their consumptions in a day and then for the entire month? Likewise, the remote controlled devices are always put on a ready mode. Such state of readiness also consumes home energy. Apart from these concerns, the parts of the home contribute to the escalating home energy consumptions. Among these are the attics, fireplaces, and the rest of the less obvious parts of the house.

The General Purpose of the Home Energy Audit

Why is a home energy audit recommended by the experts? What is this process devoted for? For everyone's clear understanding, the ultimate purpose of the home energy audit is the making possible of the efficiency in the energy utilized in the home. When the home energy used is maximized and securely utilized, there will be the most possible reduction of the utility bills today and the succeeding years to come.

A home energy audit will work best for homeowners who are confronted with very large electric bills. In fact, conducting the needed home energy audit will let you save thousands of dollars in the upcoming years. Stop dwelling on the windows and doors you have at home for they are obvious spots that let you lose much home energy. Why not look into the less obvious spots like the attic, the ceilings, and the fireplace?

Most homeowners put away their unused things and keep them in the attic. Sure, the attic is a great place to store your junked stuffs. But then didn't you ever glance at your attic and consider the renovation of it so that there will be proper insulation in there? You may indeed throw out big bucks for its improvement but it will do your attic good, so to speak. The attic must be installed with open air vents so as to keep up a good air circulation. When there is no proper air circulation in the attic, the utmost tendency is for the roofing and the stored stuff in the attic to get destroyed.

Now take into consideration the ceiling you've got at home. It must have enough insulation so that the home energy will be kept from escaping from it and to go upwards to the attic. The easiest way for heat to transfer into the attic is through a hole in the ceiling.

Also take a good look at the fireplace. When the concern of regulating and controlling the temperature inside the home comes in, the fireplace is the most difficult spot to cover. As the design of the fireplace is concerned, it is particularly aimed at moving the smoke out of the interior environment of the home.

The process is known as the propulsion of the heat. But then the main problem is that whenever the fireplace is not in use, it still goes on with the propulsion of the heat towards the exterior borders of your home.

When dealing with a fireplace, you should bear in your mind that the flue must always be kept closed when it is not being used. But if you intend to have it open, simply turn off the heater inside your home since it will come out of the vents then cross the room, and then right into the fireplace the heat will be blown out. For some logical reasons, such situation will just cause you a nightmare in terms of the electrical bills that will confront you.

If you are serious with your intention of cutting back your home energy costs, a home energy audit will be best.
